The United States has 11 thousand miles of coastline and 25 thousand miles of navigable waterways. The world of water has played a major role in shaping the nation’s development and will continue to do so. The United States possesses a rich and interesting maritime history. Maritime and naval enterprise has contributed greatly to this nation’s status of a world power. History education courses play a key role in telling this story.

This forum targets discussion of American History after the War of 1812. The United States started construction of a major navy including three 74-gun ships of the line. By the 1820s the US Navy could have met any European power at sea in a fleet engagement with a good chance of success. The only exception would have been the full force of the Royal Navy.
