NMHS Maritime Forum

Wow.  I was planning on introducing myself and thanking the NMHS for setting up a forum that really fell into my interest range.  Then I discover that this is the first post.  Hopefully this place just opened and nobody else has found it yet.  I would certainly think that I'm not the only historian that jumped for joy in finding this site.

 Anyway, my name's Richard.  I am far too distant from the ocean now due to my wife's employment and am now floundering in the high desert of northern Nevada. Dear lord ... I miss the sea spray of my Oregon coast. Someday I'll get back there ... or somewhere else in view of the waves.

 Hope this place picks up steam.  I'll get the word out there.

I have just joined this forum and I hope that it develops into an active community.  I learned of this site from a post on John Berg's Scuttlebutt list (formerly Sea-Room), which is mostly devoted to the literature of sailing ships. 

I too am far from the sea, being currently posted to Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.  We are, however, located on bluffs overlooking the Missouri River, so there is some opportunity to see boats and ships (barges, really). 

 I hope to find many interesting discussions here and perhaps a few that I can contribute to.

 So much for the message that looked forward to a lively discussion!!  I wrote the first message and took five months to read the responses.

 
Anybody have suggestions on how to make it more lively?

Your reply has just made you the "most active" poster on the NMHS Maritime Forums.  It seems that none of the forums has gotten off the ground yet.  Just too much competition for our attention I guess.
