David Rockefeller, Jr. and Sailors for the Sea will be recognized with the NMHS Walter Cronkite Award for Excellence in Maritime Education for their work in educating and empowering the boating community to protect and restore our oceans and coastal waters. Their sailing program, "Around the Americas," exemplifies the standards by which NMHS recognizes excellence in maritime education. The vessel Ocean Watch navigated 25,000 miles, visiting 30 towns and cities in 11 countries, to educate their populations about the health of our oceans and the effects of climate change.

Dana Hewson, Quentin Snediker, and the staff and volunteers of Mystic Seaport's Henry B. duPont Preservation Shipyard will receive the NMHS Distinguished Service Award for their successful historic ship restoration program, and also for their work in building important reproductions, as is the case of the Amistad. Of great significance is Mystic Seaport's current restoration project for the 1841 wooden whaleship Charles W. Morgan. Thanks to Mystic Seaport's commitment, this National Historic Landmark vessel will be restored and continue to educate and serve future generations in her voyage of lifelong learning.

Nathaniel S. Wilson, Sailmaker, will receive the NMHS Distinguished Service Award. for his 35-year career as a traditional sailmaker and rigger. Wilson is recognized as the pre-eminent sailmaker of traditional sails in the country, if not the world. The Society salutes his extensive record of sailmaking for many of the historic and replica ships such as USS Constitution, USCG Eagle, Sultana, Clearwater, Spirit of Massachusetts, Harvey Gamage, Pride of Baltimore IIMayflower II, Godspeed and Discovery. His sails appear on boats that span the history of water navigation, from replicas of Viking ships to modern vessels.

The Event: Richard T. du Moulin, award-winning yachtsman and NMHS Overseer, will serve as the evening's Master of Ceremonies at this gala event taking place at the historic New York Yacht Club, a building that boasts a magnificent Gilded Age, Beaux Arts motif, inside and out. The evening's festivities will begin at 5:30 PM with a reception in the Club's Grill Room. Dinner begins at 7:00 PM in the Model Room.

About the Awards:
The Society is in a unique position of being able to focus attention and recognition on innovative programs and effective leaders in the maritime heritage field through its awards program. The Society wishes to demonstrate that positive strides can be made in preserving our important maritime heritage, and encourages others to follow the example set by those who are honored.

The Annual Awards Dinner is the Society's major fundraiser, benefiting the work of the National Maritime Historical Society in preserving America's maritime heritage.  The NMHS Annual Awards Dinner will feature a minimum of speech making and a maximum of good camaraderie as mariners, historians, and those who care about our maritime heritage gather to honor these exceptional individuals.
