Burchenal Green has been with the National Maritime Historical Society for 11 years, the last four as its Executive Director. Her family has islands in Pointe-au-Baril in Georgian Bay of Lake Huron and she grew up summering there, traveling everywhere by boat. When she moved to the Hudson River Valley her fondest activities were taking her sons sailing and boating to explore the river. She has sailed from Block Island to Manhattan, around Nantucket and off the coast of Maine.
She has a BA from the Writers Workshop at the University of Iowa and the first MA from Columbia University in Computing in Education. She taught English and reading in New York City schools. She was managing editor of Creative Computing for 5 years, and co-editor of Tales of the Marvelous Machine and the Best of Creative Computing, Vol. 3.
She worked on archaeological digs in England and Holland and traveled with archeologists through Eastern Europe, Mesopotamia, Greece and northern Africa.
She is active with the American Association of University Women (past NYS vice president); NAACP (1994 Peekskill Community Service Award for writing "Follow the Drinking Gourd," about the Underground Railroad in Peekskill); Hudson Valley Friends of Mental Health (past president and 1989 Volunteer of the Year); and Peekskill Sailing and Power Squadron, (past executive officer).
In 1998 she worked with Howard Slotnick and Peter Stanford to bring the only parade of tall ships up the Hudson River in the twentieth century. She has a passion for history and its preservation and getting people out on ships, which strengthens their commitment. Her other passions are reading, her family, swimming and baking cookies.
