Sea History is a quarterly magazine published by the National Maritime Historical Society. We emphasize, but are not limited to, maritime history and maritime preservation in the United States and, to a lesser extent, the rest of the world, from prehistoric times to the present. Articles should be written with the general reader in mind.
Our preferred topics include, but are not limited to, historic ships and small craft and their preservation, the merchant marine and waterborne commerce, naval history, exploration and immigration, shipbuilding, maritime industries, archaeology, biography, sail training, maritime educational programs, the building and sailing of replicas, harbors and ports, ship models and marine art. We are particularly interested in obtaining excellent illustrations for our articles.
The following apply to all submissions:
- The National Maritime Historical Society does not pay for published articles and images. All the material we use is donated by the authors, collections, photographers and artists.
- We prefer manuscripts to be submitted electronically as a Word document attachment.
- We also accept hard copies that are typewritten, double-spaced with footnotes, notes, bibliography and illustrations (if any) attached after the main body of the article. Hard copies must be accompanied by the digital file of the text submitted on CD.
- Digitized images may be sent on disc at a minimum resolution of 300 dpi.
- Manuscripts should be 1,200-2,500 words in length.
- Do not send any original materials that you cannot do without. Send duplicate prints or photocopies of photographs, maps and art. If the article is published, we will request originals at that time.
- A brief bio (one or two sentences) is also appreciated as well as all contact information.
