Maritime Museums * Internet Resources * Maritime History on the Internet * Maritime Events

Since the dawn of civilization, humans have been drawn to the sea, fascinated by its vastness, power and mystery. Plato put humankind's relationship with the sea in perspective when he observed that we live around the sea "as frogs around a pond." This fascination with the sea continues today, and through the centuries mankind has come to realize that in large measure, it's relationship with the sea defines who we are as a society.

A distinguished historian, Felipe Fernandez-Armesto, put it best at the 2000 World Marine Millennial Conference when he proclaimed: "Maritime history is world history." National Maritime Historical Society supports the work of the maritime community and encourages the continuing study of the impact of the sea on our lives, whether it is the history, art, science, or culture of the sea. This area of our website is dedicated to our partners in the maritime community. We hope that this selection of resources and website links aid and inspire as we all explore the many areas of knowledge about the sea.
