The National Maritime Historical Society is pleased to announce its Host Sponsorship of the Whaling Heritage Symposium, a new symposium on the history, archeology, and new directions in whaling research. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Maritime Heritage Program along with its partners, NMHS, Mystic Seaport, the New Bedford Whaling Museum, the New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park, and NOAA's Fisheries Service have organized this symposium in order to enhance our understanding of crucial aspects of the whaling past.

The Whaling Heritage Symposium will prove stimulating for the public and professionals alike, examining the broader cultural aspects of historic whaling and how it impacts our current relationship with the sea. The program will focus on three themes: indigenous whalers and cultural interactions, the history and archaeology of whaling, and new directions in whaling heritage research.
