On a summer morning in 1895, the beautiful steamer Mary Powell, most famous for the by-gone Hudson River sidewheelers, rounds Dunderberg Mountain at the sourthen entrance to the Hudson Highlands. Built in 1861 for service as a fast dayboat between Rondout, N.Y. and New York City, the Mary Powell had a distinguished career for a remarkable 57 years, faithfully transporting passangers on a brisk and precise daily summer schedule. Called “Queen of the Hudson”, the Mary Powell was frequently sought out by the chic new steam yachts of the day for the purpose of racing her, in the hope of establishing a rare and much celebrated victory as a faster vessel.
